The 4 Ways To Avoid A “Nose Job Gone Wrong”

When it comes to cosmetic surgery, not all surgeons are created equal. Prospective patients who are considering rhinoplasty (aka a nose job) need to do their research and find the best surgeon for them. While there are many great plastic surgeons out there, unfortunately, there are some who take shortcuts and leave their patients with unnatural-looking noses that don’t suit them. Expanding your knowledge about cosmetic surgery, including the different types of procedures and what to look for in a surgeon, will help you make an informed decision about whether or not you’re ready for this big step. If you feel like a rhinoplasty is right for you—and you choose the right surgeon—you can achieve a more balanced and proportional nose that makes you feel more confident about your appearance.

Know the Basics of Rhinoplasty

There are four common types of rhinoplasty surgery: – Closed rhinoplasty: A closed rhinoplasty involves making incisions inside the nose and using the patient’s own cartilage to reshape the nose. This procedure is best for people who don’t want a noticeable scar on their nose. – Open rhinoplasty: An open rhinoplasty involves making incisions on the outside of the nose and repositioning the nasal bones (these are the bones that help form the nose). This procedure is better if you have a larger nose or want to make a significant change to its shape. – Hybrid rhinoplasty: A hybrid rhinoplasty is a combination of both open and closed rhinoplasty techniques. The surgeon will make some incisions inside the nose and other incisions on the outside. – Liquid rhinoplasty: Liquid filler is injected into the nose (the whole procedure takes approximately five minutes), and the results can be reversed or made permanent.

Research Your Surgeon

When choosing a surgeon for your rhinoplasty, make sure that he or she is board-certified and has experience performing rhinoplasty on a wide range of nose shapes and sizes. When reviewing surgeons, look for ones who have extensive experience with rhinoplasty and use images of their patients as examples of their work. A nose job is a major procedure, so you’ll want to make sure you choose a surgeon who is qualified and has lots of experience. It’s also a good idea to find out how many rhinoplasty procedures your surgeon performs each year. This information can give you a sense of how busy your surgeon is and help you decide whether or not you want to choose them.  Dr. Rivkin from TrueNose has conducted thousands of nose jobs.  Located in Beverly Hills, he’s often referred to as the Nose Job Doctor of the Stars.

Be wary of ads that promise unrealistic results

You may come across advertisements that promise dramatic rhinoplasty results in a short period of time—with no surgery required. While you might be tempted by these promises, keep in mind that they’re very unlikely to be true. There are no pills or creams that can replace surgery when it comes to rhinoplasty. Thankfully, there are many regulatory bodies that are tasked with keeping misleading ads off the air and out of magazines.  The only viable option that’s non-surgical is a liquid nose job that uses filler.  TrueNose is a well-known provider of such nose jobs.

Check patient reviews and ratings

You can also do some research and check out online reviews and ratings for prospective surgeons. Even if the surgeon performs mostly cosmetic procedures and has no complaints from their rhinoplasty patients, it’s a good idea to see what others have to say about the experience. If you come across some negative reviews, use them as an opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes. If many of the reviews are positive, it’s a good sign that you’ve found a good surgeon. If you find a surgeon with great online reviews, it’s a good idea to contact the patients and ask them questions about the experience. You can ask how the surgery went and if they’re happy with the outcome. You can also ask if they’d recommend their surgeon to others.

Check for certification and licensing

It’s also a good idea to check to see if your surgeon is certified and/or licensed. Many states require surgeons to be licensed, whereas certifications are a voluntary designation. The American Board of Medical Specialties maintains a directory that lists doctors and their board certification. You can search by your surgeon’s name or specialty and see which boards they’re certified in. You can also double-check your state’s medical board directory to see if your surgeon is licensed in your area.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Before you sign any paperwork or commit to surgery, make sure you’ve asked your surgeon every question you have. You may be nervous, but there’s no shame in asking as many questions as you need to feel comfortable with your decision. You and your surgeon should be on the same page when it comes to your expectations for the procedure. Be sure to discuss things like the surgery process, healing timeline, and your post-procedure care so there are no surprises after your rhinoplasty. Lastly, don’t be afraid to follow up with your surgeon if you have any concerns or questions about your care post-op. If you do your research, choose a qualified surgeon, and ask the right questions, you can reduce your risk of getting a nose job gone wrong and achieve a more balanced and proportional nose that makes you feel more confident about your appearance.
